2024 Interior Design Trends I’m Into

How is it already January!?  I feel like December went by so quickly (even though school vacation week felt like an eternity). But, it’s always nice to have some quiet time to reflect on the year and look forward to what the new year will bring. Although I didn’t make any specific new year's resolutions, I do want to be a little more bold in my design choices in 2024. I’ll always pride myself on making practical and timeless design choices but taking a few smart risks here and there can be so rewarding. Here are a few 2024 interior design trends that I’m into:

  • Moody rooms: I will always love white paint but I also recognize that darker paint can be a great base in a room, too. A deep green, dark gray, or bold mauve can really make furniture pop and sets a totally different tone than a bright, white room can.  I know it can feel risky painting a room dark because it’ll make the room feel smaller, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If your goal is to create a place where people can relax or have great conversation, you might want the room to feel smaller.

  • Large Wall Art: I have a client who really inspired me on this one. They love bold, quirky artwork and gravitate towards large format pieces that fill a wall. It’s a good reminder for me about the purpose of decor. Interior decorating should be fun, and clients should purchase items that make them feel happy rather than worry if it’s the “right” choice. I think black & white photos and serene landscapes will always have a place, but why not add something with a bit more personality into the mix?  If you're not ready to commit to wallpaper, large format art can be a great alternative by adding a print or color to an otherwise dull space - without the long term commitment.

  • Hardware with Flair: For the last few years, hardware has been sleek and minimalist. That's not a negative, but I like the recent trend towards a more playful approach to hardware. That doesn’t mean it has to suddenly be eclectic but it should have some interesting details, texture, or a unique finish (see this beautiful example from Signature Hardware). This also means take a look at door knobs, registers, brackets, etc. - there are so many overlooked ways to add a little flair.

  • Hand-crafted Tiles: Another trend that a few of my clients have gravitated towards recently is the hand-crafted tile trend (e.g. zellige tile). That’s because they somehow look great in a variety of aesthetics: modern, boho, coastal…you name it. The tiles look natural and modern simultaneously making it a timeless choice and great alternative to the subway tile trend. Because of their intended imperfections, they add depth and bounce light around, helping to liven up any space.

  • Micro-spaces: Some of us would love to move to a bigger house but with high interest rates and low inventory, the majority of us have to stay put for now. So, I love how creative clients are getting in carving out space in the smallest of nooks. One of my favorite creative places is turning the dead space under the stairs into ample storage, a reading nook, or mini bar. I also love an underutilized closet getting a 2nd life as a mini office with a narrow desk and floating shelves (add a sconce for soft lighting!). Essentially, any wall or nook can be turned into usable space if you think outside the box.

Now, I say think outside the box as if it’s that simple. I’m sure you’ve thought about all the possibilities in your house and still feel unsure about what is the best path forward. If you feel a little stuck, I’d love to help. As a certified interior decorator, I can partner with you to find solutions that are both beautiful and practical. Let’s connect!
